MongoliaHow to reach A vast sparsely populated country with little infrastructure Mongolia relies heavily on air transport. Buses are an increasingly popular way of traveling around the country Bus routes start and end in Ulaan Bataar, the capital city of Mongolia. Slightly more expensive minibuses that travel between popular spots are quicker and more comfortable. Mongolia's 1750 km railway is made up of a north-south line which is part of the Trans-Mongolian Railway connecting China with Russia. Ulaan Bataar is linked to Russia and China by the Trans-Mongolian Railway. An express train runs once a week between Moscow Ulaan Bataar and Beijing. Where to stay Mongolia is an inexpensive country with a variety of choices for visitors and tourists. As the country is still relatively unexplored, tourists have a good option to bargain for room rents and related services. Every thing is negotiable in Mongolia and depending upon tourists inflow, you may get expansive accommodation at a throw away price. Major Attractions Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia is the major centre of tourism. Other major urban centers are Darkhan and Erdenet. In these cities there are a number of Buddhist sites, depicting the once profoundly Tibetan-Buddhist character of the culture before Communism. Today only a few original monasteries remain, but others are being slowly reconstructed and restored. Terelj, within easy reach of Ulaanbaatar, is one of the most active centers of tourism, with opportunities for adventure sports such as hiking, rafting, horseback riding and rock climbing. Kharkhorin (Karakorum), the former capital of the Mongol Empire, is home to the country's most important monastery and serves as a convenient base for visiting other nearby attractions. The northern Khovsgol region, with its beautiful alpine lake, is a popular area for tourists, and the vast Gobi region has also become a common addition to a touring itinerary. For travelers wishing to get off the beaten track, eastern Mongolia remains mostly unexplored and the far west offers remote lakes, snow-capped mountains and the unique culture of the resident Muslim Kazakhs. Specialty of the place Mongolia is not a typical holiday destination. The place takes you to a different pedestal altogether with its unique nomadic culture and ancient history. The place offers great opportunities to those looking for an insight into the Buddhist way of life and rise and fall of monasteries. ![]() ADD THIS TO YOUR SOCIAL BOOKMARKS
